Master's Program Students Awarded Best Delegation at TaoMUN

Two MCU GSIA students of the International College were awarded the best delegation during the first-ever TaoMun conference in early December. The two MCU foreign students of the Graduate School of International Affairs (GSIA) are Theresia Shanel from the Solomon Islands and Joselynne Mendez from Guatemala. They attended the First Taoyuan Model United Nations (TaoMUN) conference over the weekend on December 2-3 over the weekend. This event, sponsored by the Youth Affairs Bureau of Taoyuan City Government, was hosted by Yuan Ze University (元智大學) at Chung Yuan Christian University.

The Model United Nations (MUN) is an educational simulation and academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations by going into debate and forming a resolution. This year marked the first time Taoyuan hosted such event, thus the name TaoMUN. The two female MCU foreign students were part of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) during the two-day conference and were assigned to represent the Republic of Paraguay.
Having 44-member states attending a committee was not easy to choose who would get the top award. With brilliant young scholars, the chairlady had a very difficult time selecting the best delegation which had to be one out of the 44 countries. The two Ming Chuan students finally stood out in the council due to their remarkable performance and well-geared background knowledge on international relations and other world issues.

The two GSIA foreign students, Shanel and Mendez, encourage other Ming Chuan students to take part in such activity because not only does it boost a student’s confidence level, but it also allows a student to learn how to solve world problems at a younger age.
